I always wonder if the reason my dog sleeps all day is because he is bored or tired. I thought dogs need as much sleep as humans, but this isn't true.
How Long Do Dogs Sleep?
Dogs need about 12 to 14 hours each day. In comparison, we only need about 8 hours a day!
Larger breed dogs need more sleep, but don't be surprised if you catch your little pup sleeping a lot as well. Puppies need extra sleep because they are busy growing both in size and learning all about their surroundings. Puppies need between 18 and 19 hours of sleep every day.
Is My Dog Oversleeping?
If you feel that your dog is sleeping more than normal, then there may be something wrong. Improper nutrition will make your dog more sluggish. Consider trying a higher quality dog food and avoiding unhealthy treats. If the dog is eating treats that are hard to digest, they will feel more tired.
Dogs Are Very Flexible Sleepers
Dogs spend most of their day sleeping, but they don't need to get it all done at once. They constantly nap throughout the day to catch up on sleep. This can cause trouble at home if they decide that they want to be active throughout the night. If this becomes an issue, then try a few of these tips:
- Avoid playing with your dog near where you or the dog sleeps.
- Take your dog for a long walk before bedtime.
- Make sure your dog has a comfortable bed to sleep on.
- Put your dog in a crate at night.
- Have your dog sleep away from noises and disruptions.
Why Do Dogs Circle and Dig Before They Sleep?
Dogs circle and scratch the floor before they sleep because of natural instincts. Most of the time they are scratching a hard floor or a firm couch. This makes me wonder why they can't realize it doesn't make a difference. But it just feels right for them. The pads in their paws release a scent into whatever they are scratching. This makes them feel comfortable. We all know dogs want everything to smell like themselves... That's why they pee on everything!
Do Dogs Have Dreams?
Have you ever looked at your dog sleeping and noticed them twitch or even looking like they are running? I like to imagine that they are dreaming about chasing squirrels or pouncing on a bird! If your dog sleeps all day, I'm glad he gets to dream about what he loves! Humans and dogs have a lot in common when it comes to sleep patterns.
Both dogs and humans dream during the REM sleep phase. If you want to watch them dream then wait about 20 minutes after they fall asleep. You'll start to notice that their breathing may become irregular and they'll take shorter breaths. Their muscles may start twitching every so often as well. If you can manage to look at the dogs eyes up close, you'll see that their eyes will be moving. This is the most obvious characteristic of REM Sleep. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. Their eyes are actually looking around at what they are seeing!

So yes, your dog sleeps all day, but that's okay! Let your dog rest so he is ready to play again! But don't feel bad if you need to interrupt their sleep, because dogs are very flexible sleepers.
